MONROE COUNTY AND HOUSING AUTHORITY OPEN 20 NEW WORKFORCE HOMES SPLIT BETWEEN CONCH KEY AND BIG PINE KEY

CONCH KEY & BIG PINE KEY, FL – Monroe County Mayor Holly Merrill Raschein, along with the Land Authority Chairman and County Commissioner David Rice and Monroe County Housing Authority board members and staff, celebrated the completion of 10 elevated, code-compliant rental units on Conch Key and 10 units on Big Pine Key, on the sites where trailers were destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Between the two locations, there are 18 one-bedroom homes and two two-bedroom homes to be rented to low-income and extremely low-income working households, with rents ranging from $400 to $1,900. The Conch Key location, known as Conch Cove, also includes a fully ADA-compliant unit and another unit equipped with hearing and visual aids.

Monroe County purchased one of the trailer parks and the Monroe County Land Authority purchased the other one and leased both to the Housing Authority for 99 years. More than $7 million was allocated to this project from the Federal Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funding to help build affordable replacement housing in the Florida Keys after Hurricane Irma. The Board of County Commissioners waived the permit and impact fees to expedite this project.

“It is a beautiful relationship between the County and the Housing Authority, and I truly admire their work on this project,” said Rice. “Unless we can build resilient workforce housing, we won’t be able to support the operation of businesses in the future.”
