Milodjina’s Summer with the Key West Police: A Journey of Learning and Growth

Milodjina Pierrilus, 17, a participant in the 2024 A Positive Step of Monroe County “Idle Hands Summer Youth Employment Program,” has spent part of her summer interning with the Key West Police Department, working with Property and Evidence Supervisor Megan Wilcox and also participating in a couple of “ride-alongs” with KWPD officers as they go about their patrols. Milodjina was born in Haiti and moved to Key West as a young child. She’s a 2024 Key West High School incoming senior who does her own hair braiding and helps take care of her eight-year-old brother while her parents are at work. She said that this is her first job and she enjoyed seeing and working with the different types of evidence in the Property and Evidence Department and participating in the “ride-alongs” where she experienced radar speed checks and learned about doing license plate searches for outstanding warrants. Milodjina plans to attend Florida International University in Miami and study business management or finance.

This year’s “Idle Hands Summer Youth Employment Program,” has 18 participating students and runs from May 27 through July 27. Since 2010, A Positive Step of Monroe County, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and the City of Key West have partnered to provide paid summer jobs with the City to Key West High School students aged 16 and up who are returning to school in the fall.
