Mila DeMier attends Congressional Hearing

Washington, DC. – May 25, 2016 – Today Mila DeMier sits in the Rayburn House Office Building listening to the hearings as Oxitec speaks to Congress on the possible release of genetically modified mosquitoes in the United States.

Oxitec a British biotech company wants to conduct “human experiments on a small neighborhood in Key Haven (Florida Keys), Florida. Mrs. DeMier has opposed this release, she started to investigate what this release of “GMO” mosquitoes would do to her community. After she found out, she started a petition on Change.org. Ms. Demier and Meagan Hull traveled last night from Key West to be present at this hearing to listen to what Oxitec is trying to pass on to Congress.

Oxitec, a British company owned by Intrexon is planning to release genetically modified mosquitoes into the fragile environment of the Florida Keys. The company wants to use the Florida Keys as a testing ground for these mutant bugs. This release has not one single peer review. The FDA issued a “Preliminary Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) In Support of an Investigational Field Trial of OX513A Aedes aegypti Mosquitoes” which ended in May, 13, 2016.

The initial idea for this release was to curtail Dengue fever. The last case of a dengue outbreak in Key West was back in 2010, wherein 28 cases were reported. Now that Zika has shown its ugly head around the world Oxitec is now saying this release is against the Zika virus.

Oxitec released their GM mosquitoes in Brazil and soon after there was a Zika outbreak that is causing pregnant women to give birth to babies with microcephaly.

The residents of the lower keys have displayed their response to the release of these GM mosquitoes by posting in their yards a “No Consent” sign.
