Mayoral candidate Danny Hughes announced today he is ending his 2018 campaign for Key West Mayor due to a back injury suffered last week.
Throughout the campaign Danny has put the people of Key West first. Due to the timing of this medical issue, coming the week before qualifying, Danny feels the best way to continue to put the voters first is to withdraw from the race and allow other candidates to address the needs of voters with the effort and focus the job deserves.
“This is a very tough decision, but making the hard decisions is what I’ve done throughout my career. I’ve been successful because I’ve put the interests of my customers and employees ahead of my personal interests and ambitions. Today, I continue to do that.
“I promised the people that if elected I would give 110% and make a difference for our community. It turns out other plans were in store. What seemed a small health concern at the first, with my back, we soon realized was going to take much more rest, care, and attention than anticipated, with doctor’s orders being that If I did not take it easy for what could turn into several months, I could risk permanent damage.
“After consulting with my family and with my doctors, I know that I must put aside my goal of serving the people of Key West as Mayor, and address my health, so that I may continue to best serve the voters, my employees, and my family. I am truly humbled by the overwhelming support my candidacy has received and will most certainly stay involved as an active supporter of our wonderful community.
“I pride myself on being a man of my word, and I know that I could not serve you in the way you deserve, so I have made the decision to withdraw. I want to thank all of my supporters for your time, donations, words of encouragement, and amazing efforts on my behalf.
