Man wanted to stealing $30K in cash arrested in Nevada

A 30-year-old Marathon man, formerly of Wisconsin, was booked into Monroe County jail Friday morning regarding a warrant for the theft of thousands of dollars from a former Marathon landlord.

Matthew Jacob Jensen was charged with larceny of more than $20,000 and less than $100,000, burglary and property damage.

The case began on Dec. 1, 2018 when the victim reported that his bedroom on the 1500 block of Yellowtail Drive in Marathon had been burglarized, the door damaged and that six bank envelopes each containing $5,000 were missing.

Detective Mario Benedetti was assigned to investigate. The victim told Detective Benedetti that he told Jensen in November 2018 — Jensen was a tenant who was living in a separate bedroom in the victim’s house — that he needed to vacate the premises for failure to pay rent for the previous two months. The victim gave Jensen until Dec. 1, 2018 to leave. The victim left the house on Dec. 1 to go fishing and returned that night to find his locked bedroom door had been damaged and his bedroom burglarized. The victim stated Jensen was the only person with access to the house and the only person in the house when he left to go fishing. The victim checked several boxes in his closet where the money was kept. The money was gone. The victim told Detective Benedetti that Jensen didn’t know about the money nor where it was kept.

Empty bank envelopes the victim used to keep the money were found under the bed in Jensen’s bedroom.

Detective Benedetti filed a warrant for Jensen’s arrest after several attempts to locate him via friends and family were fruitless.

Jensen was recently arrested in Nevada and returned to Monroe County for that warrant. The details of his arrest in Nevada were not immediately clear Friday.

Jensen remains was booked into Monroe County jail on a $105,000 bail Friday morning.
