Man reported missing flees from deputies

A man reported missing and possibly endangered from Brooksville, Florida fled from deputies who tried to stop his vehicle Sunday.

Deputies received information at 10:45 a.m. that 28 year old Benjamin Manhoff of Sarasota, Florida was traveling southbound through Key Largo. They knew he was reported missing and might be suicidal so they began to watch for his white Hyundai.

Deputy Dyllon Hansen spotted the car at Atlantic Boulevard and U.S. One. He pulled behind it and turned on his lights and siren. The car continued to travel at or below the speed limit, but refused to stop. Deputy Hansen could see a man in the driver’s seat.

Deputies attempted to deploy stinger spike strips twice, but Manhoff was able to drive around them and avoid puncturing his tires. With the assistance of a marked patrol truck from the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the car was finally stopped at the 84 mile marker. Deputies had to break the vehicle’s window to remove Mannoff because he refused to open the locked door when ordered to do so.

Manhoff was mentally evaluated and it was determined he was not a danger to himself. He was then placed under arrest. He was charged with fleeing and eluding police and he was booked into jail.
