Man involved in fight arrested for resisting arrest

A 42-year-old man on Big Pine Key was arrested Thursday evening after attacking a small group of people and resisting arrest.

Shawn Thomas Roehm, formerly of Jacksonville, Florida, was charged four counts of battery, assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence and resisting arrest without violence.

Deputies Ty Torres and Richard Wang were called to the 29000 block of Ocean Lane at 6:30 p.m. where they found an off-duty Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer on the scene as well as the suspect, identified as Roehm, handcuffed and sitting on the ground. The FWC officer stated she was approached by a person at her residence down the street who told her a man was attacking a group of people at a neighboring house. The FWC officer stated she could hear people screaming for help. The FWC officer arrived to find four men and one woman in an altercation. She ordered everyone to stop. Everyone stopped, save for Roehm who continued to cause a disturbance. She attempted to place Roehm in custody when he began to resist by pulling away. Other FWC officers arrived and helped handcuff Roehm.

Deputy Torres attempted to walk Roehm to his patrol vehicle when Roehm refused to stand up and used his body weight against Deputy Torres. Deputy Torres and Deputy Wang were eventually able to get Roehm into a patrol vehicle whereupon he was searched for weapons or contraband. Roehm began to pull away, refused to sit in the patrol vehicle while becoming more aggressive. Deputy Torres told Roehm to stop or he would be shocked with a Taser. Roehm grew more combative and spit on Deputy Torres. Roehm ultimately had to be shocked by a Taser from Deputy Wang. Paramedics arrived on the scene and medically cleared Roehm.

The witnesses stated they were sitting outside when Roehm arrived intoxicated and demanding a paycheck — a paycheck for what was not immediately clear. The first witness stated Roehm pushed him and began, “fighting everyone.” Another witness stated Roehm appeared to be threatening the female present, spurring the witness to intervene. That witness stated Roehm grabbed him by the neck and choked him.

Roehm threatened Deputy Torres and his family while en route to jail. Roehm continued to spit on the window barrier separating the front and rear of the patrol car.

Roehm was booked into jail.
