Man dies in apparent suicide after SWAT call out

The Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was called to 50 Silver Springs Drive in Key Largo at 2:48 p.m. Tuesday after a Deputy attempted to serve an eviction notice.

While that Deputy was attempting to serve the paperwork at a door to the house, 911 Communications Specialists notified him that a male subject inside stated that if he sees a Deputy he will take his own life. The Deputy heard a loud “pop” at retreated from the immediate area.

SWAT members as well as other Detectives and Deputies were called to the scene and they cordoned off Silver Springs Drive and the immediate area for resident’s safety.

The Sheriff’s Office attempted to make contact with the man inside for the next several hours to no avail.

The decision was made for SWAT to enter the house about 5:30 p.m.

Frederick Witmer Rice, 52, of 50 Silver Springs Drive, was found inside, in a bedroom, deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was still in his possession. A note stating his suicidal intentions was also found.

Autopsy results are pending.

There were no other injuries reported.
