Man arrested with burglary tools

A 25-year-old Big Pine Key man wearing all black was arrested late Tuesday night after residents reported seeing a suspicious person walking up and down the street and peering into homes.

Brian Thomas Sagan of the 29000 block of Tropical Trader Road was charged with possession of burglary tools, loitering, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputies Jonathan Lane and Anthony Buscemi were dispatched to Joyce Road on Big Pine Key at 11:30 p.m. regarding a suspicious white male dressed in all black who was looking into houses. Deputy Lane arrived to find a white male, later identified as Brian Thomas Sagan, wearing all black with a flashlight in his back pocket and a multi tool on his belt. Deputy Lane observed a large bulge in his front pocket, which contained a hood with two eye holes, a nose hole and mouth hole cut into it.

Sagan claimed he had been walking to his girlfriend’s house, but parked elsewhere because her father doesn’t like him. Sagan changed his story several times. Deputy Lane went to the house Sagan so claimed and talked to two residents there who had no idea who Sagan is or the other people Sagan claimed lived there.

Deputy Lane went to Sagan’s vehicle parked on an empty lot behind a tree on Sea Grape Street. There was a hammer, wire cutters, a socket wrench and a pipe containing marijuana inside the car.

Multiple residents/witnesses reported seeing Sagan walking up and down the street leering into homes.

Whether or not any residences or vehicles were burglarized remains under investigation.

Sagan was taken to jail.
