Man arrested in air rifle incident

A 20-year-old man was arrested Sunday evening after he pointed an air rifle at a motorist.

Adesina Xiomel Adefunmi of Jacksonville, Florida, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

There were no reported injuries.

Deputies Jon Healy and Vince Pacifico were called to Front Street on Stock Island about 6 p.m. regarding an assault. Deputy Healy found Adefunmi. Adefunmi stated he was shooting birds with an air rifle, but added that he could understand how he might have scared someone who thought he was carrying/shooting a traditional firearm. The victim in the case told Deputy Pacifico that he was driving down Front Street toward 4th Avenue when he saw a group of individuals in a mobile home parking lot. He stated that one of the individuals, who the victim later identified as Adefunmi, pointed a rifle at him as well as his fiancé.

The victim stated he believed the gun to be a Mosin-Nagant style rifle.

Adefunmi invoked his right to remain silent. The air rifle was placed into evidence.

Adefunmi was taken to jail.
