Man arrested for illegally possessing handgun
A 29-year-old Miami Gardens man was arrested Wednesday in Key Largo for possessing a handgun illegally.
Dwayne Clifton Campbell was charged with carrying a concealed firearm without a permit and he also had warrants for failure to appear in court.
Sgt. James Hager was on patrol on U.S. 1 at 11:30 a.m. near Mile Marker 100 when 911 Communications staff informed him a the owner of Honda pickup truck had warrants. A female was driving with a passenger, later identified as Campbell, in the front passenger seat. The vehicle had a left brake light out and Sgt. Hager stopped the truck near Atlantic Drive. Campbell stated he was the owner of the vehicle. Campbell stated he knew his license was suspended, but was unaware of any warrants. Campbell removed his jacket while speaking to Sgt. Hager and placed the jacket on the passenger seat.
Sgt. Hager noticed trace amounts of marijuana on Campbell’s lap. Sgt. Hager informed Campbell he was going to search the vehicle. Campbell stated there was a gun in the vehicle. A 9mm Ruger was found in the jacket pocket left on the front passenger seat by Campbell. The gun was not in a case or holster. Campbell stated he did not have a concealed carry permit for the gun. Campbell stated he was from an open carry state and forgot he had the gun in his jacket.
Campbell was taken to jail. The female driver was not charged.
