Man arrested for forging checks
A Marathon man was arrested Tuesday for forging checks totaling more than $3,000.
Matthew Richard McKeon, 25, was charged with five counts each of grand theft, forgery and passing a forged check.
A family member went to the Sheriff’s Office substation in Marathon on Tuesday after he discovered upon reviewing his bank statements that McKeon was stealing checks out of his check book. McKeon then forged the man’s signature and writing the checks out to himself. The man confronted McKeon and McKeon admitted to forging the checks. McKeon told the man he needed money due to his drug problem.
Deputy Rosary Ponce then went to McKeon’s residence where he admitted to stealing the checks.
In all, five checks were cashed this month totaling $3,050.
McKeon was taken to the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island where his bond was set at $22,500.
