Man arrested for fleeing on U.S. 1

A 23-year-old Stock Island man motorist was arrested Saturday for fleeing from a Deputy in a stolen car.

Qubert Braian Wilson-Gordon was charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, hit and run, fleeing and eluding and reckless driving.

The incident began at approximately 1:30 a.m. when Deputy Nick Galbo observed a silver Kia Optima stopped in the left northbound lane at the flashing yellow light at 3rd Street on Stock Island and U.S. 1. The Kia took off as Deputy Galbo approached. The Kia failed to stay in a single lane and drove into the grassy median several times.

Deputy Galbo turned off his lights and siren, but followed the Kia as it swerved, slowed down and sped up with its headlights going on and off. The vehicle slowed down and appeared to be stopping near Mile Marker 10.5. Deputy Galbo waited for backup before approaching the Kia. The driver, later identified as Wilson-Gordon sped away again. Deputy Galbo did not pursue the Kia. The Kia struck another vehicle on U.S. 1, smashing its side-view mirror. The Kia finally crashed and stopped near Mile Marker 13. Wilson-Gordon then fled on foot. A search for him was unsuccessful.

The Kia was reported stolen out of Stock Island by the victim who identified Wilson-Gordon as the suspect. The victim stated Wilson-Gordon left his residence with his car without his permission.

Detective Wendy Negron located Wilson-Gordon at another Stock Island residence where he admitted to stealing the car.

Wilson-Gordon was taken to jail.
