Man accidently shoots himself with handgun

A 22-year-old Navy service member from Georgia stated he accidentally shot himself in the shoulder Wednesday night on Stock Island after he initially told the Sheriff’s Office he was shot by a robber.

Damarcus Benjamin was treated and released at Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock island. His injury was not reported to be life threatening.

There were no arrests or charges filed as of Thursday morning.

Deputy Zachary Eason, Detective Sgt. Linda Mixon and Detectives Wendy Negron and Boyd Williams responded to the hospital at 8 p.m.

Benjamin initially stated he was jogging near the CVS Pharmacy on Stock Island when he was shot by an unknown white male suspect in a blue hoodie who attempted to rob him. He stated he then called his wife to pick him up and drive him to the hospital. Benjamin and his wife changed their story several times. Benjamin’s hand tested positive for gunshot residue. Benjamin eventually stated that he was playing with a handgun while riding as a passenger in a vehicle with his wife who was driving. He stated he accidentally shot himself and she then drove him to the hospital.

A GLOCK® 9mm handgun and a spent 9mm casing were found in the vehicle.

Detectives are still investigating the incident. Charges could be pending.
