Mainland man cited for lobster violations

A 34-year-old Davie, Florida man was cited Sunday for multiple lobster violations.

Maykel Calderon Alvarez was given notices to appear in court for possession of undersized lobster, possession of out-of-season lobster and for possessing no lobster measuring device while in the water.

Alvarez was issued warnings for diving without a dive flag and possessing over-the-limit barracuda.

Middle Keys Marine Deputy Wilfredo Guerra observed a man, later identified as Alvarez, with a speargun by the seawall on the south end of the Long Key Bridge. Alvarez exited the water with what appeared to be a lobster in hand and walked toward a vehicle. Deputy Guerra asked to inspect his catch and Alvarez agreed. Deputy Guerra found four undersized and out-of-season lobsters. The lobsters did not appear to have been speared. Deputy Guerra found three barracuda.

The limit for barracuda is two per angler or six per vessel. Barracuda must be not less than 15 inches and not more than 36 inches.

The regular lobster season runs from August 6 through March 31. The two-day recreational sport season is July 24 and July 25 this year. The carapace for lobsters must be greater than three inches and measured in the water. The limit for lobsters in Monroe County is six per angler. Spearing of lobsters is prohibited. Harvest of egg-bearing female lobsters is prohibited.
