Lower Keys League of Women Voters | Heather Carruthers featured speaker at Fifth Tuesday, April 30

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is the topic of discussion when Monroe County Commissioner Heather Carruthers meets with League of Women Voters and friends for Fifth Tuesday, 5 p.m., April 30, at Camille’s Restaurant, 1202 Simonton St., in Key West.

Reauthorization of the important federal flood insurance program is of high interest to Keys residents, but simple reauthorization of the program is not enough.  Reauthorization must include reform with provisions that improve the affordability and transparency of the program, more funding for flood mitigation, and greater participation and enforcement nationwide.

“It is critically important during the current reauthorization that we stay actively engaged in the legislative process, closely monitoring congressional activity and proposed legislative changes – and advocating for preserving affordable premiums and protecting the program,” explains Carruthers.  Carruthers will discuss how Monroe County residents can help federal and state legislators fully understand the importance of NFIP to residents of Key West and the Florida Keys. Audience Q&As will follow the presentation.

Fifth Tuesday is sponsored by the non-partisan Lower Keys League of Women Voters.  The league is dedicated to fostering informed and active participation in government through educating the public on major policy issues.
