Longtime Sheriff’s Office lieutenant promoted
Sheriff Rick Ramsay promoted Lt. Alberto “Al” Ramirez to the rank of Captain Wednesday afternoon before a standing room only crowd at the Sheriff’s Office training room in Marathon.
Capt. Ramirez is a 32-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office who is currently assigned to the Upper Keys. His decades-long career has spanned many areas of law enforcement in the Florida Keys.
“It is an honor to promote my co-worker and my friend today,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “It says a lot about the man to see how many people turned out to honor him. It speaks volumes about who he is and how he goes about his job.”
Capt. Ramirez is a decorated Army veteran. He began his service with the Sheriff’s Office as a Bureau of Corrections Deputy in 1989. Capt. Ramirez moved over to road patrol in 1990 where he went on to become one of the Sheriff’s Office most proficient narcotics investigators. He was also attached to a federal narcotics task force for many years. Capt. Ramirez is a valued mentor for members of the agency.
Many neighborhood and business leaders in Key Largo know Capt. Ramirez through his tireless work on holidays, his efforts coordinating traffic details, spearheading trash clean ups and marine patrols to name just a few of his tasks as a community leader in the Upper Keys.
Capt. Ramirez is a multiple Deputy of the Quarter Award winner. He’s also been awarded multiple other Sheriff’s Office awards in service to the community.
