LIFE IS JUST PLAIN FUNNY TO GERRI LOUISE GATES
Gerri Louise Gates is the funniest person in the room. Period.
You would be hard-pressed to find anyone in Key West who knows her who would argue that statement. She’s just plain funny…the way she thinks, the way she acts, the way she talks, and certainly what she talks about. There isn’t a reverent bone in her body.
Which is why, come Sunday or Monday, February 26th or 27th, you’ll want to be sitting in the Red Barn Theatre by 8 pm. Because Gerri Louise will be offering her hilarious new one-woman show, “Still the Old Class Clown – Just a Lot Older”, and it’s going to be a pair of very funny nights. Just don’t wait too long…Opening Night is already nearly sold out, and there are only 160 seats total available for the entire two-night run.
Gates – called one of Key West’s theatrical treasures – has been under the lights for a long time. As an actress, she’s been seen on all of the city’s stages. But a series of health issues slowed her down recently, and then there was November.
“We need to laugh more these days,” Gates said. “We’re in a lot of trouble. We’re all throwing up and worrying about whether the government’s going to wipe out our Social Security and Medicare, and God knows what else, and we’re all getting older. We really need to laugh in this dangerous, uncertain time.”
So Gates went about creating “Still The Old Class Clown…”, an hilarious look at the baby boomer generation and what they’re dealing with. She was awarded an Anne McKee grant to create the show, and has spent the last several months pulling the material together.
“It wasn’t that hard,” she said. “I just started with myself. I mean, here I am and I’m still 30 in my mind. Every baby boomer still has that 30-year-old mentality. We still think we can go out and disco and drink all night at Aqua. But we have a potty in our bedbroom, and we’ve gotten a new hip, and we need two new knees! What the hell happened?!”
Gates will not only mine that subject, but will delve into many others as well, including marriage, politics, and new business ideas she’s had for the Boomers and Millennials (some of which – while laugh-out-loud funny – make you stop and think, Hey, that might actually work!).
Come prepared to laugh, no matter what Gerri Louise touches on. She will be, after all, the funniest person in the room.
Tickets for Gates’s shows are available at redbarntheatre.com/tickets or 305-296-9911.
