LETTER TO THE EDITOR / TWO CONSTRUCTIVE POLITICAL PARTIES
By Roger C. Kostmayer
The American experiment with democracy evolved into a two national party system designed to encourage cooperation, compromise and competition to see who could do the most good for the most people, and for the nation. The role of the party that lost the last election once was the honorable “loyal opposition”, and that party played an important and constructive role. Not long ago, each party elected both conservatives and liberals whose primary goal was not to obstruct everything the opposition tried to achieve.
Several decades ago, that concept began to change, and today the Trump Party is controlled by a malignant narcissist and followers who are anti-democracy and anti-truth, at a time when we most need two functioning parties committed to democratic values.
One viable solution would be to create a new moderate center-right political party that would make Abe Lincoln (the first Republican president) proud and attract conservatives and independents who are committed to: Truth, democracy; the Constitution; free and fair elections; fiscal prudence; science and facts; women’s rights; everyone paying their fair share of taxes; and E Pluribus Unum.
Presumably and hopefully, both Trump and the Trump party would wither and disappear with this solution, and the new Republican Party, like the mythical Phoenix bird, would rise from the funeral pyre and quickly become constructive and competitive – for the good of the nation.
