LETTER TO THE EDITOR / The Studios of Key West

To the editor:

I would like to thank The Studios of Key West [TSKW] for selecting me to participate in their artist residency.  Their generous program provided free housing with a studio and an extremely supportive staff and community.  I was welcomed by the friendly TSKW staff and a community of creative, committed individuals.  As a first time visitor to Key West, I immediately fell in love with its natural beauty, beaches, special light, history, cultural and culinary offerings.

The residency invited three artists from July 16th – August 14th, 2018.  There were two visual artists [Annie Howe and me] and a poet [Caylin Capra-Thomas].  Although our work, backgrounds and ages were varied – this residency provided the time and circumstances to share our studio practice with each other and the TSKW community.  TSKW encouraged us not only to create, but to explore Key West’s incredible resources.

TSKW paired us with community volunteers [I was paired with the amazing Lisa Esposito] who helped connect us to Key West in a more personal way. We were lucky enough to: visit the studios of local artists and galleries; enjoy a snorkeling excursion thanks to gift certificates from Fury; join Paula and John Tishok for a lovely kayaking trip, enjoy dinner with The Executive Director Jed Dodd and his family and witness many beautiful sunsets.

Time slowed down yet went so quickly.  The Studios of Key West, the people who reside in Key West and the island itself were so difficult to leave.

Thank you again TSKW,

Jaynie Crimmins
