Letter to the Editor / THE STAKES ARE HIGH

By Roger C. Kostmayer

For 230 years the United States maintained a democracy based on the rule of law and the Constitution.  The founders, the states and the people have, until now, been unanimous that no king, dictator or individual should be above the law, and that our democratic experiment should be based on government that is of the people, by the people and for the people.

The Congress, Democrats and Republicans, is now in the process of deciding if that original commitment to democracy is still viable.  67 US Senators will have to decide if the Constitution, the rule of law, checks and balances, and equal branches of government should succumb to a new precedent that puts this President, and all those who follow, above the law.  Unless two- thirds of the Senate determines that extortion, bribery, abuse of power and betrayal are impeachable offenses as the Constitution spells out, Pandora’s box will open and democracy as we’ve known it could change for all time.

It is “We the People” who must listen, decide and speak truth loudly to our elected Senators about the democracy we inherited, the government we deserve in the future, and the obligation to put our country above our divisions.
