LETTER TO THE EDITOR/ SAVING UKRAINE – and US

By Roger C. Kostmayer

Supporting Ukraine by helping NATO provide whatever it takes, stops Putin from making it OK for both Russia and all other dictators to militarily invade and “acquire” neighboring countries.  President Trump is likely (for unknown reasons) to give in to Putin and his new army from North Korea, and that could open a Pandora’s Box of international horrors based on the new “Might makes right” standard.

Others, especially our former Russian Ambassador Michael McFaul, have pointed out that it’s not too late to support Ukraine and correct mistakes.  The most obvious correction is to cancel  limitations imposed by the US that prevent Ukraine from defending itself by counter attacking Russian missile bases in Russia.  That’s absurd. It means “you can shoot and kill our civilians and destroy our energy installations, but we can’t retaliate if the missile launches are in Russia”.

Similarly, we and NATO must see that Russia pays a financial price for its invasion and destruction.  To start, the US  and Europeans are holding some $300 billion of Russian funds, these funds should be immediately transferred to Ukraine for reconstruction and health support.

Russia is a state sponsor of terrorism and, economically, is considered to be a large gas station the size of Texas. There are even more solid actions (that would be difficult to undo) and they should be taken immediately by the current US President, such as sanctions aimed at Russia’s energy industry.
