Letter to the Editor / ICARUS AND HIS ASYMMETRIC STRATEGY

Roger C. Kostmayer

The President may have revealed his four step strategy to attack our judicial system and avoid the irrefutable evidence of treason and obstruction of justice that’s pending against him.  First, he has already begun to grant unprecedented numbers of pardons and commutations to, mostly, undeserving candidates. This sends a message to co-conspirators, that they should not cooperate with the authorities or testify against the President – because he will protect them with pardons.

Secondly, the constant flow of pardons (for criminals, felons, political supporters, celebrities, and corrupt politicians with whom the President identifies) will desensitize and confuse the public, so that . .

Third, Trump will then be able to pardon: members of his family, anyone involved with the Russian attack, and others who might endanger him by telling the truth.

Finally, Trump will pardon himself, create a Constitutional crisis, attendant chaos, and this will end the Republican Party as we know it.

It’s an interesting strategy, even if it won’t succeed.  You can fool all the people some of the time, some of the people all the time, but you’re not likely to fool or successfully bully professional journalists and our independent judicial system.  Whether our legislative branch will develop the spine to be part of the democratic solution is yet to be determined.
