LETTER TO THE EDITOR / GOVERNOR NORTHAM REDUX

Roger C. Kostmayer

Initially, I said that without the support of his party or his constituents, Virginia Gov. Northam was rendered ineffective and should step aside. Within days, the next two people in the line of succession have come under a cloud, one criminal the other a blackface incident as a teenager. The third person in line is a Republican legislator, which is not that for which the people of Virginia voted.

The voters of Virginia, many of them minorities, put Northam in office and only they should decide if he should be allowed to finish his term. Unfortunately, under these unusual circumstances, the will of the people isn’t easily determined. But it is possible for the governor to go to the people and his party, to listen, make his case and engage in honest and difficult conversations. His audiences probably won’t be able to see into their Governor’s heart, but they can judge his actions and service to community over the last 35 years.

Gov. Northam and his political party should then follow the will of the people they serve.
