Letter to the Editor / FALSE EQUIVOLENCE
By Roger C. Kostmayer
Historians point out that the November 8, 2022 election is among the most critical in American history. That’s because the stakes are so high, the quality of our elected representatives will be determined by these election results, and your vote will decide whether our future remains democratic or becomes disastrous.
Traditionally, voters looked to see what plans or “planks” the two political parties and their candidates promised to do FOR them; today our concern should be what parties and candidates will do TO us and TO our nation. Traditionally, political parties and candidates shared most American values (or said they did), like honesty, hard work to help others, and to produce solutions to challenges facing all Americans. There used to be a fundamental commonality that does not exist today, voters used to pick what and who they hoped were the best apples in the barrel.
Today, one political party actively supports: democracy, equality, the Constitution, free and fair elections, peaceful transfer of power, the rule of law, privacy rights including women’s right to control their health decisions including abortions, common sense gun regulations, solutions for student debt, protecting the globe from warming, bipartisan solutions, and the truth. And the other political party DOES NOT, because their focus is solely on gaining or retaining partisan political power – at any cost.
