LETTER TO THE EDITO / CARROTS AND STICKS
By Roger C. Kostmayer
Ukraine and the US face some difficult decisions. If we look in the rearview mirror of history and see some leaders of one of the world’s largest religions endorsing and actively supporting Hitler, to what degree should the Western allies have held them accountable? Today, another mass murderer fascist dictator, Putin and Russia, have received the unequivocal support of the leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church. For various reasons, Putin has rewarded the church and ordered a 36 hour unilateral cease fire in Ukraine during the church’s religious holidays. Should Ukraine, the US and their allies respect the religious holiday and cease defense of the country? Military experts point out that, to some degree, the motivation of Russia’s cease fire is military and political weakness, and need for more ammunition, weapons and troops. Or, should Ukraine and its supporters ignore the cease fire and increase both their offense and defense to drive the invaders out?
On the global scale, the US must also demand support for Ukraine (instead of unconscionable support for Putin) from countries America supports – starting with Israel, India and Saudia Arabia.
