Lacrosse is a rapidly growing sport at Key West High School. The head coaches for the boys and girls team are Coach Jake Luce (for the boys team) and Coach Alexandra Chuquillangui (for the girls team), and they are both ecstatic and anxious for their seasons to begin this spring. There are many factors to take into consideration with coaching this sport. Coach Chuquillangui explains, “I learned that you have to work really hard for what you want and to accept people where they are at and help individually with what they’re struggling with.” Chuquillangui then expressed her ideals about the team specifically, “My goal for this season is definitely to build better team chemistry.” She intends to work on the skills that the girls need to build upon this year. “Also I just want to show the girls what it’s like to win.” She also adds, “Discipline has an important role in the fundamentals of a team that has the determination to end up on top.”

Coach Luce also echoed these thoughts, and added what he looks for in a team player, “I am looking for somebody that knows how to catch and throw, someone who can run, someone who knows the game, and someone who has good work ethic.” This also transcends to school performance as well. “Work in the classroom is also very important,” Luce adds.

Unfortunately, this will be a rebuilding year for the boys, as close to half the team graduated last year, but Luce is not worried. “There are a lot of incoming freshmen, and I am very excited about it,” he says. This year’s team has only three seniors, but Coach Luce has confidence for this season, including hopes for senior Miles Mungel to be the starting goalie.

Coach Luce and Coach Chuquillangui are both leaders and teachers in their community, and they welcome students to try out for lacrosse in February. This growing sport at Key West High School is in great hands with Coach Luce and Coach Chuquillangui, and all are welcome to join in the fun and celebrate this burgeoning sport.
