La Creperie Commended for Green Practices
Mayor Craig Cates, during the recent City Commission meeting, commended the owners of La Creperie French Café for becoming the first Key West business to earn Green Business Certification.
Twelve businesses have volunteered to participate in the pilot Green Business Certification program, and Laurent and Julie De Cock’s La Creperie was the first to attain the recognition. Businesses document a variety of green practices, including water and energy use, cleaning practices, recycling and reuse. They strive to procure regional and organic foods and reach out with exemplary customer education.
The program was started up by the City’s Preserve Island Life program as part of a strategy to preserve the Keys for future generations. The City of Key West is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas footprint island wide by encouraging the community to reduce its carbon emissions. Private businesses account for 39 percent of the city’s greenhouse gas emissions, and this certification program is aimed at encouraging responsible conservation practices.
