KWPD Horse Dies
Police Chief Sean Brandenburg is saddened to announce that one of the Key West Police Department’s horses passed away this morning.
Lou, a Percheron/paint cross, was a beloved member of the department’s Mounted Unit. He was generously donated in 2018 by Dr. Louis Spelios of Island Dental and was named for him.
Lou has been a valued member of the department for five years. Key West kids have grown to know him through numerous school visits. Lou has provided demonstrations of his fine training to civic groups. He has served as an ambassador to the community while protecting our streets. His sheer size allowed the officers a better vantage point in crowds so they can respond quickly and efficiently. He garnered respect while effectively clearing roads for parades.
It is a true loss,” said Chief Brandenburg. “He brought pride not only to our department but to the community. When people saw him patrolling our streets they were thrilled. Our Mounted Unit is one of the best public outreach units we have. Our hearts go out to the amazing group of volunteers who have bonded with Lou through the years and supported our Mounted Unit.”
Lou will be sorely missed by the Key West Police Department.
