Key West Sunrise Rotary to rededicate Knight Pier Compass Rose

The Key West Sunrise Rotary Club and Rotary District 6990 Governor Drew Monaghan invite city officials, residents and fellow Rotarians to the rededication of the Compass Rose at the Edward B. Knight Pier at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. Club members contributed more than 300 hours planning and repainting the iconic symbol with a Rotary wheel at its center. The city provided the paint and barricades.

The Rotary Compass Rose was first dedicated in April 1998 as a gift to the City of Key West and its citizens. It has been repainted several times over the years due to weathering and fading. The blue and gold Rotary wheel exhibited by more than 33,000 clubs worldwide represents civilization, movement and service work in action.

Another goal of this community service project was to raise awareness of Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio. Since 1979, Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. Today, the devastating virus is found in only three countries: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

The Key West Sunrise Rotary Club in the Conch Republic, established in 1988, provides community service, supports charities and funds college scholarships through events including BrewFest and a golf tournament.
