Key West Police Detectives solves several cases with one arrest

A single arrest by Key West Police Detectives may solve at least four recent crimes including burglary and robbery.

On February 18th officers responded to a reported robbery on No. Roosevelt Blvd at 3rd St. The victim said he’s been thrown on the ground, then hit over the head with a bottle while he was reaching into his car. During the struggle, the victim said the assailant pulled a knife on him, kicked him in the groin, then took his wallet, which contained $3,000. After the attack, the victim reported the assailant took off on a bike.

Officers found a bike and backpack abandoned nearby. The backpack turned out to have been reported stolen on February 14th when someone smashed the window of a truck parked on Simonton and stole a variety of items. The same night, a vehicle on Caroline St. had the window smashed and contents stolen.

With the help of surveillance photos in several areas, fingerprints, the stolen property and witnesses, detectives were able to determine the James Glenn Maroe, 28, was the suspect in the cases.

Maroe was arrested without incident and taken to the Monroe County Detention Center where he faces several felony charges including assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft, robbery, burglary and grand theft.

In addition, Maroe is also a suspect in a trespassing case in which an intruder broke into and apparently lived in an unoccupied home on Washington St. On February 15th, a Realtor was checking on the house and found evidence of a squatter, including open beer cans and food wrappers.
