Key West NOW Women’s Film Fest Five Wednesdays in March

Key West – Five fabulous films are on the docket as the Third Annual Key West NOW Women’s Film Festival opens Wednesday, March 1 at the Tropic Cinema. 

Our first film is the explosive docu-drama “Woman King,” starring the award-winning Viola Davis. She leads an army of women in Dahomey fighting the Portugese slave trade in 1823. This stellar film links February’s Black History Month and March’s Women’s History Month. 

“Born in Flames,” (March 8) is a experimental docu-fiction about a dystopian US, ten years after a “social democratic” revolution. This 1983 cult classic shows that even after a decade of change, women are still not getting their due and a radical band of women set out to fix it.  

“Trouble with Angels” (March 15) is a light-hearted comedy from the ground-breaking, pioneering director Ida Lupino. Released in 1966, this film stars Haley Mills and Rosalind Russell, as the leader of a rambunctious group of girls in a convent school, run by a Mother Superior played by Rosalind Russell.

Those of you who attended last year’s festival will remember “The Beaches of Agnès” by one of the leading lights of the French New Wave Cinema, Agnès Varda. We’re presenting her 1962 film “Cleo from 5 to 7,” this year  (March 22) as a follow-up to that whimsical autobiography. Here, a young pop singer contemplates her own mortality as she awaits the results of a biopsy.  

The final Wednesday’s film (March 29th) is the HBO documentary, “The Janes,” telling the story of a group of women in pre-Roe Chicago, who worked together to provide safe abortions to thousands of women. Two of these women (now in their 80s) will join us by Zoom, after the screening for a discussion of this very important topic.

The Key West Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) promotes woman’s rights to reproductive health care, fairness in education and employment, freedom from violence, justice for LGBTQIA citizens and life without racism. The Tropic Cinema is an awarding-winning, non-profit theater presenting current and classic films of particular interest to the diverse Key West audience.
