Key West man with an extensive arrest history
A Key West man with an extensive arrest history has received five years in prison after pleading no contest to violating probation in four previous criminal cases.
On August 13, Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Timothy Koenig also placed Orlando Grimon, 34, on probation for five years following his release after pleading no contest to grand theft. Grimon agreed to banishment from Monroe County while he is on probation.
Assistant State Attorney Christopher Bridger represented the state.
Grimon was arrested on January 24, 2017, for a home-invasion robbery, which violated part of the terms of his probation. He also violated probation by failing to submit to electronic monitoring (“leaving the tracking device at home, work, or other places will be grounds for a violation”). He did so five times in January 2017 – including the day before his arrest in the theft. He was charged with the probation violations on February 14, 2017.
The grand-theft plea grew out of the robbery. According to a Monroe County Sheriff’s Office report, Grimon and another man, who turned out to be Alain Menendez, entered a home on Maloney Avenue on Stock Island, “used force to subdue the victim” and took more than $1,500 from him.
The victim told police that when the pair entered his home, he recognized Grimon but the other man was wearing a mask and had a gun. The masked man said, “Give me your money,” and the victim recognized the voice as that of Menendez. The victim told police he told him “I know who you are” and asked “why are you doing this?”
After police arrived, the victim was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center for a head wound, which he told police was from being struck by the gun.
Grimon’s probation officer told police that Grimon called and said he “had to get out of there, requesting to meet with her face to face to explain the situation.” He “sounded extremely nervous.” He ended up at the jail, where he was charged.
The probation-violation counts resulting in the five-year prison sentence stem from four different cases dating back to 2013. To settle those cases, Grimon pleaded guilty to trafficking in stolen property, aggravated stalking, cocaine possession, possessing more than 20 grams of marijuana and fleeing and eluding police and was sentenced to three years and four months in prison on October 15, 2014. He received probation for other charges in those cases.
He also was sentenced to three years in prison on November 23, 2010, for trafficking cocaine and lewd and lascivious battery.
For the January 24, 2017, robbery, Menendez pleaded no contest to burglary and grand theft and was sentenced on August 8, 2017, to three years in prison followed by two years of probation. He also received three-year terms that day to settle separate drug cases.
