Key West man has been sentenced to state prison

A Key West man has been sentenced to state prison for breaking into two businesses on the same night.

On April 4, Joshua Vaughan, 30, was given 18 months by Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Mark Jones after pleading no contest to burglary of a structure, petit theft over $100, criminal mischief causing $1,000 or more in damage and trespass of a structure. Prison will be followed by 36 months of probation. Assistant State Attorney Christine Poist represented the state.

In one incident, city police were called to a Duval Street eyeglass shop on November 19, 2018, about a burglary. Someone had thrown a rock through the front window and took Ray Ban sunglasses worth $220.

Vaughan was already in jail on a separate charge and when booked, he was wearing the same shirt as the person seen in video from the eyeglass shop and had a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses.

In the other incident, management at a Duval Street restaurant reported to police that someone smashed a sliding glass window. Video showed the suspect used rocks, then left the property, then returned and tossed a chair into the window, “clearing out all the glass that remained.” Police were able to identify Vaughan through security video.

In addition to prison, Vaughan must pay $1,720 in restitution to the eyeglass store and $1,227.56 in restitution to the restaurant.
