Key West International Airport To Hold Full-Scale Emergency Exercise Wednesday Night

KEY WEST, FL – The Key West International Airport will be conducting an annual review of its Airport Emergency Plan with a full-scale exercise on Wednesday evening, from 9 p.m. to midnight. The airport will remain open throughout the event.

The Federal Aviation Administration requires the airport to conduct the review at least once a year. Every third year, the airport must perform a full-scale exercise during the review.

Monroe County Fire Rescue – Airport Station 7 will lead the full-scale exercise. Other participating agencies will include: the City of Key West Fire & Police, Naval Air Station Emergency Services, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Lower Keys Medical Center, Fisherman’s Hospital, American Red Cross and other critical agencies.

Fourteen students from Key West High School will act as injured passengers and play a critical role in the success of the exercise.  The drill is designed to test the emergency responders at the airport and the local community’s response in the event of an aircraft disaster.

“It will be a challenging exercise this year for the participants,” Monroe County Airport Battalion Chief “Cab” Bentley said. “Never before have we held this drill at night. This added difficulty for the emergency responders will be a good test. It also will enable the airport to better evaluate its readiness in the event of a real emergency.”
