Key West Garden Club Meeting, December 1, 2016

The Key West Garden Club will be meeting on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. The meetings are held in the pavilion at the Fort West Martello on Atlantic Blvd. in Key West.  This is the home of the Key West Garden Club.  At this meeting Beryn Harty will be our speaker.  Her topic will be “Native Butterflies and Their Host Plants”.  The meetings are open to the public and are free.

Beryn is a transplanted Connecticut Yankee, who moved to Florida back in 1976 after graduating from Middlebury College in Vermont. She and her husband, Rick, moved full time to their home on Ramrod Key in 2007. Previously a biologist with extensive experience in Medical Research, Laboratory Medicine and Anatomic & Surgical Pathology, she then changed her focus to the native flora and fauna of the Florida Keys.  Many Lower Keys residents have previously joined her on walks to view birds, butterflies and/or plants in their natural environments. Others have attended one or more of her naturalist photographic presentations, enjoyed her photographs in local publications and exhibits, or tried their hand at solving her monthly photo ID quizzes which she included for years in the newsletters of the key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden.  Her presentation to the Key West Garden Club is designed to familiarize attendees with the more common local species of butterflies, as well as to share the species of host plants which will attract them to our local yards.  Weather permitting, she plans on enjoying a walk in the garden afterwards to see who’s flying about, and to point out some butterfly important plants to those coming along.
