Key West Film Festival announces Florida premier of “After Parkland” documentary
The 8th Annual Key West Film Festival, set for November 20-24, announces the Florida premier of the documentary feature film ‘After Parkland,’ set to be screened on Saturday, November 23 at 2:30pm at the Tropic Cinema. Filmmakers Emily Taguchi and Jake Lefferman will be in attendance and host a discussion to accompany the film.
In the aftermath of the February 14, 2018 killing-spree at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 students, faculty and staff-members dead, filmmakers Taguchi and Lefferman traveled to the Fort Lauderdale suburb and began filming with students who had endured gunfire, including student David Hogg who recorded his class during the attack and became the public face of the Never Again movement, and parents who lost children in the massacre.
The 90-minute documentary weaves together candid, in-depth interviews, verité footage, and personal videos and photos, and chronicles intimate and defining moments, ranging from hours of quiet grief and reflection, to political awakening, and on to pivotal milestones on the public stage – all overshadowed by profound loss and an elusive search for normalcy. ‘After Parkland’ is an intimate chronicle of families as they navigate their way through the unthinkable: reckoning with unexpected loss, journeying through grief, and searching for new meaning.
‘After Parkland’ is one of three 2019 Key West Film Festival films that examine the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shootings and aftermath. The other two are each 19 minute short films, one also titled ‘After Parkland,’ and the other titled ‘The Brave Shall Rise,’ about a stay at home mom who runs for public office following the shootings.
Now in its 8th year, the 2019 Key West Film Festival will showcase dozens of curated films, spotlight visiting filmmakers, actors, directors, and industry leaders, and present the only “Critic’s Focus” film festival program in the United States, along with plenty of red carpet and social events. Limited one-day passes and individual tickets are now available pending seat availability for all films and events.
