Key West Film Festival – 5 for 5 – Don’t Miss Out
1. THE DAUGHTER: For those of you who were fans of In The Bedroom, Simon Stone’s The Daughter is another intense and affecting family drama. With a bravado performance by Geoffrey Rush, cast against type as a patriarchal villain, this gem from Australia is not to be missed. Paul Schnieder, Miranda Otto and Sam Neill round out the cast.
2. CONTEMPORARY COLOR: Documentaries are always very strong at KWFF and this year is no different. Contemporary Color takes our knowledge of high school color guard and throws it out the window, as Bill and Turner Ross turn their camera on David Byrne’s annual showcase of the best color guards in America. Instead of recorded music, the students acts are matched up with live performances by Ira Glass, Nelly Furtado, Dev Hynes, The Beastie Boys and more, as the true colors of these wonderfully talented students shine through.
3. THE ISLANDS AND THE WHALES: The best documentaries challenge the way we view things, and Mike Day’s The Islands and The Whales is a classic case of this. Turning his camera on the self sufficient and sustainable fishing culture of the Faroe Islands, thousands of years of tradition are at risk when discoveries of rising mercury levels in the seas force them the nation to come to a crossroads of environmental, health and moral concerns. And it forces the viewer to consider far more angles to these issues than we normally do.
4. ONE WEEK AND ONE DAY: Three years ago, hearts were broken at KWFF by the uplifting and devastating film from Belgium, The Broken Circle Breakdown which went on to be nominated for an Oscar. This year, Israel gives us One Week and One Day, perhaps the most human and affecting story this programmer has seen all year, about what tears us apart and what brings us together.
5. STRIKE A POSE: Don’t act like you’re not intrigued by Strike a Pose. Who wouldn’t want to go behind the scenes and follow the six dancers who were the leads of Madonna’s Truth or Dare tour. But 25 years later, there’s a much bigger story than the tour. The dancers reunite to revisit how profoundly their lives were changed and shaped by their time together. As a special treat, dancers Salim and Jose will join us for a Q and A.
