Key West Dementia Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group
Caregiving for their loved ones, those who suffer from the debilitating disease dementia and Alzheimer’s, may be terminal for those dutifully trying to keep together a home, a family and a job, or just even one of the above. Sixty-three percent or more of caregivers precede in death the ones they care for. This is because the stresses of such duties far exceed anything demanded in any other occupation. This is why the Caregiver’s Support Group of Key West was formed some half dozen years ago to help those who care for their loved ones. To provide information and encouragement in an attempt to sustain caregivers through years of frustration and fatigue for the inevitable failure of the loved one’s mind and body.
The group is voluntarily chaired by a psychologist in which caregivers may express their concerns with confidentiality, seek answers to their questions and obtain the moral comradery to help them in this most difficult of tasks. Meetings are informal, confidential, educational, and social, and intend to boost the morale of those caregivers suffering with the stress and strain of what is understood by many to be the most difficult job on earth. The group meets twice a month, no fees are involved, 5 pm until 6.30 pm, the first and third Wednesdays of every month at Womankind, the corner intersection of Truman, Eisenhower, Jose Marti and Roosevelt. Join those who are caring for their spouses, partners, siblings or parents.

Information about Dementia everyone should know!
Dementia, a debilitating disease that attacks the victim in many ways; sleeplessness at night, unreasonable fears causing panic, separation anxiety, expressive dysfunction, and the inability to find words, or understand words: Reason and logic depart eventually, catastrophic memory loss, temporary amnesia, hallucinations: Physical and mental limitations from Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs) complicating life in previously unimaginable ways: The list goes on, being different for different loved ones, slowly getting worse, month-by-month, year-by-year. Finally perhaps, bladder and chest infections and then the gradual increasing onset of malnutrition and dehydration will slowly take the life of our loved ones away from us.
