Key West Art & Historical Society Distinguished Speaker Series guest Rick Smith to share colorful history of Florida’s past at Tropic Cinema
On Thursday, November 16 at 6:00pm, Key West Art & Historical Society welcomes Distinguished Speaker Series guest Rick Smith at the Tropic Cinema where he is to present a multimedia showcase of his late father’s works, entitled, “Patrick Smith’s Florida is a Land Remembered.” The author of seven novels and nominated three times for the Pulitzer Prize, Patrick Smith is considered Florida’s “literary ambassador.” Rick Smith presents an unforgettable multimedia show about his father and the experiences that led him to write his novels, with special emphasis on his popular saga of Florida pioneers, “A Land Remembered.”
Smith’s presentation promises “a sensory delight incorporating video clips, photos, paintings, music, sound effects and a few jokes to transport you to another place and time.” In a letter of nomination for the Pulitzer, the National League of American Pen Women wrote, “The universal truth expressed in Patrick Smith’s work transcends regions, languages, and races. He issues a clarion call for man to re-examine his own sense of self-importance in relation to the world around him, and to reassess his role in preserving life on this planet we must all share with nature if the human race is to survive.”
The Distinguished Speaker Series project is sponsored in part by the Helmerich Trust and the Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council of the Arts and Culture and the State of Florida. Additional support provided by the Marriott Key West Beachside Resort.
Tickets are available at kwahs.org/education/distinguished_speaker_series; $5 for members, $10 for non-members—advanced ticket purchase is recommended. For more information contact Adele Williams, Director of Education, at 305-295-6616, x115. Your Museums. Your Community. It takes an Island.
