Juvenile dies following diving incident
A 13-year-old Marathon, Florida male died at Fishermen’s Hospital Tuesday following a free-diving incident.
“This is a heartbreaking and tragic case,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.”
The juvenile was spearfishing with a 13-year-old friend at 3 p.m. in approximately 25 feet of water approximately eight miles south of Duck Key when the incident occurred.
A good Samaritan mariner transported him ashore to Marathon where he was taken to the hospital.
Foul play is not believed to be a factor in the incident that remains under investigation.
Autopsy results are pending.

This is so tragic. It is so much harder to die when free diving compared to scuba, but I had two dangerous incidents. One, near shallow-water blackout, from spending 4 hours chasing one 5-inch but well-hidden lobster in 82 degree water. got out and collapsed in my boat, shaking, just in time. another time, caught in a swarm of men-o-wars, three stinger coils, but no allergic reaction. Both times alone. I hope I can understand how this poor kid died, with a partner.
