Joe Garcia Issues Statement on World Refugee Day
Miami, FL – Today, former Congressman Joe Garcia issued a statement in honor of World Refugee Day which recognizes the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.
“As the son of refugee parents and as someone who worked to resettle refugees from Latin America, this issue is very near to my heart,” said Joe Garcia, candidate for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. “I am humbled by the courage and sacrifice of the people who leave behind their home in search of opportunity and prosperity for themselves and their families and I am proud to live in a country that has created opportunity for so many people seeking refuge on its shores.”
Joe Garcia spent much of his life fighting for the human rights of refugees in Congress and as part of the Cuban American National Foundation. In Congress, Garcia introduced the Venezuelan Liberty Act which would have resolved the asylum claims for tens of thousands of Venezuelans seeking refuge from the oppressive Venezuelan government. Garcia was also the sponsor of the last comprehensive immigration reform bill to be filed in the House. As part of the Cuban American National Foundation, Garcia traveled to dozens of countries and helped over 10,000 Cuban refugees relocate to the United States.
