MONROE COUNTY, FL – If you are a veteran in Monroe County and you need a ride to the mainland to visit the doctor, there a good chance you know James “Jimmy” Steffen, Monroe County’s employee of the fourth quarter. Steffen drives veterans to and from the Miami VA Hospital three days a week, more than 162 miles each way, for typically 12-hour days. He handles the long drive, challenging traffic, unpredictable weather, and unforeseen vehicle issues daily.
In addition to his work ethic and positive attitude, Steffan was awarded the employee of the quarter for his heroism off the clock when he heard a woman screaming who fell into a canal. Steffen jumped into the water, saving her, and kept her from drowning until Monroe County Fire Rescue arrived.
“Jimmy also remained calm and collected when the veteran transportation vehicle he drives blew a tire out on the peak of the 7-mile bridge before sunrise,” said Cathy Crane, director of the department. “Jimmy took proper precautions ensuring passenger safety, many of whom applauded his ability to act under pressure with confidence and professionalism. He is very deserving of this recognition.”
Employees also nominated for the award included Nicole Petrick and Natalie Maddox.
