Jail inmate dies after apparent suicide

A 35-year-old Big Pine Key, Florida man in the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island died Tuesday after he was found in his cell unresponsive due to apparent suicide.

Dakota Morgan Gray was found in his cell at approximately 10:47 a.m. and was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay requested the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) investigate the incident. The Sheriff’s Office is also conducting its own investigation.

“The FDLE is conducting an independent investigation into this incident with our full cooperation,” said Sheriff Ramsay.

Gray was arrested by the Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 19, 2023, on warrants for battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, larceny, and trespassing with a $105,000 total bond.
