You couldn’t miss them! On Saturday 150 veterans donned what organizer Jess Forsythe called “Ranger panties” and took to the streets of Key West.
For the 6th consecutive year, the Irreverent Warriors came together for a few days of camaraderie and fun in an event that culminated in the Silkies Hike, so named for the tiny workout shorts they wear.
The Irreverent Warriors organization is a force that unites the veteran community and drives healthy culture within its members. Through creative engagements, events, and strong veteran-based support networks, their aim is to improve mental health and prevent veteran suicide.
Mayor Danise “Deedee” Henriquez and the City Commission proclaim Irreverent Warriors Key West Silkies Hike Week during the December commission meeting.
In this country, there are an average of 22 veteran suicides a day. The Warriors have adopted the acronym IGY6 to support PTSD awareness. It means “I got your back” in military terms where 6 o’clock means straight behind you. The theme is a way to share the idea that they have each other covered and support them in any way possible.
Forsythe, the group’s lead coordinator, and Chad Salinero accepted the proclamation.
