Intersection trio gives Impromptu Concert performance at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on March 12
The vibrant Intersection Trio, featuring violin, cello, and piano heads to town for an Impromptu Concert performance at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 401 Duval St.
Intersection is a classical and crossover group that has forged a powerful connection with audiences worldwide.
They have been seen by audiences from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra. Formed in 1998, the group’s recordings have been best-sellers with CD sales over 100,000 in Japan alone.
A typical performance may center on music for trios by Ravel, Dvorak, Mendelssohn or Brahms, followed by American music, in musical forms spanning from the most recent avant-garde of compositions to lighter fare such as excerpts of film music and popular theater.
Violinist Laura Frautschi has established a reputation as a versatile musician with a strong commitment to contemporary as well as classical repertoire. She performs as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States and Asia and has given world premieres of violin concerts while collaborating with American composers such as Lee Hyla and Augusta Read Thomas.
In addition, she is a concertmaster of the New York City Opera Orchestra, and has toured internationally as concertmaster of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
Cellist Kristina Reiko Cooper has been hailed by the New York Times as “sensational in concert” and as a “stunning virtuoso” by the Los Angeles Times. She was the first-prize winner of the 1998 prestigious Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award, and has performed as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.
Cooper is an enthusiast of contemporary music and has premiered in Tigran Mansurian’s “Cello Concerto #2,” the European premiere of Mario Davidovsky’s “Cello Concerto,” the world premiere of Roberto Sierra’s “Sonata for Cello and Piano” and the world premiere of Phillip Glass’s “The Sound of a Voice.”
Pianist John Novacek has taken top prizes at the Leschetizky Association, Etude Music Club, Carmel Music Society, Mannes Concerto and Janna Hodges International Piano Competitions. He has performed nationally at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Avery Fisher Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Lincoln Center and the Hollywood Bowl, while international venues include Paris’ Theater des Champs-Elysees and London’s Wigmore Hall.
At the Key West concert, the Intersection Trio will perform “Intersection,” by Kenji Bunch; and “Piano Trio No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 66,” including “Allegro Energico e Con Fuoco,” “Andante Espressivo,” “Scherzo: Molto Allegro Quasi Presto,” and “Allegro Appassionato,” by Felix Mendelssohn.
The trio will also present “Intersection Goes to the Movies!”; including the selections “Suis Moi!,” by Louis Moreau Gottschalk; “Smile,” from “Modern Times,” by Charlie Chaplin; the theme from “The Godfather,” by Nino Rota; “I Could Have Danced All Night,” from “My Fair Lady,” by Frederick Loewe; “Amorosso,” by Ryuichi Sakamoto; and “Moon River” from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” by Henry Mancini; and a “Grand Movie Medley,” by John Williams.
