Inmate dies at Key West jail  

A 63-year-old inmate at the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island was found unresponsive in a cell after an apparent suicide at approximately 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A Detention Deputy making scheduled rounds found Robert Blair Schminky, who appeared to have hung himself with a bedsheet, and immediately began first aid.

Schminky was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay requested the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conduct an independent investigation and their investigation has begun.
