Increased Enforcement Aimed at Increased Safety
Pedestrians and bicyclists are more vulnerable than all other road users. In 2019, 890 pedestrians and bicyclists lost their lives on Florida’s roadways.
The Key West Police Department has subcontracted with the Institute of Police Technology and Management and the Florida Department of Transportation to conduct High Visibility Enforcement of specific violations in high-risk locations. The program, Florida’s Bicycle Pedestrian Focused Initiative: Communication and High Visibility Enforcement, funds dedicated patrol in an effort to reinforce safe pedestrian, bicyclist and driver behaviors in priority Florida counties.
The goal is to reduce traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists using high visibility education and enforcement details. The extra enforcement will begin along the North Roosevelt corridor by mid-October. As a reminder, you must come to a complete stop at crosswalks with flashing red lights and proceed only when the crosswalk is clear.
