Honoring Legacy: Key West Declares October 12th ‘Kenny “Mr. Goombay” Miller Day

Commissioners Monica Haskell and Lissette Carey, Mayor Danise “Deedee” Henriquez, Lawana Tynes, Adrian Johnson, Vice Mayor Clayton Lopez, and Commissioners Donie Lee and Sam Kaufman. Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover was in attendance via Zoom.

Mayor Danise “Deedee” Henriquez and the Key West City Commission paid tribute to the late Kenny “Mr. Goombay” Miller by making October 12th his day.

Miller was a founding member of the local group “Positive Movement,” uplifting those around him through his commitment to community and positive change. His extraordinary talent and passion for song and dance made him a beloved entertainer in Bahama Village and the Key West community at large.

Miller served honorably in the United States Navy and was a member of the Coral City Elks Lodge #610.

He made the Goombay celebration his “homecoming, earning him the affectionate title of Mr. Goombay. He captivated audiences both in and out of costume during the Junkanoo parade for over 30 years. His mainstage performances were a highlight of the festivities.

“Kenny was called to glory on September 8, 2024,” reads the proclamation, “and we share in your grief and extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family and loved ones.”

Family members Lawana Tynes and Adrian Johnson accepted the proclamation during last week’s commission meeting.

“If he was here,” said Tynes, “he’d be so proud to see this day.”

The honor acknowledges Miller’s invaluable contributions to the rich tapestry of culture that makes Key West unique.
