Home burglar arrested

A 29-year-old homeless man was arrested Wednesday after breaking into multiple homes in Islamorada over the course of several hours.

John Christopher Collins was charged with burglary, larceny, possession of burglary tools and possession of methamphetamine.

The Sheriff’s Office was called to three locations on the 82000 block of the Old Highway, the 100 block of Avocado and on De Leon Avenue.

Collins was found outside the Old Highway residence. A property manager there had security footage of him inside the house. Multiple items had been moved around, “tent forts,” built in two rooms and lights and televisions were turned on. The shower was used and miscellaneous sundries such as soap were also used or missing.

Collins had a backpack that contained bolt cutters, .22-caliber charges for a power nail gun and a small about of methamphetamine.

Homeowners at the other locations reported a man matching Collins’ description entered their residence as well and removed things such as soft drinks and water bottles. Those two owners only wished for Collins to be trespassed from those properties.

Collins was taken to jail.
